Newtown has a long history dating back to the early nineteenth century. The area was named after the Earl of Newtown in 1832 after it was originally part of the land granted to Governor Arthur Phillip in 1794. The suburb was primarily a farming community in its early years, with agriculture and market gardening being the main industries. However, the discovery of coal in the nearby Hunter Valley in the mid-nineteenth century sparked an industrial boom, and Newtown grew to become a major hub for manufacturing and commerce.
Newtown experienced a cultural renaissance in the late twentieth century, with an influx of artists, musicians, and other creative types. This has resulted in a thriving cultural scene that can still be seen today, with many art galleries, theaters, and music venues in the area.
